Batchelors savoury rice and other supermarket own brand savoury rice like Tesco and ASDA were once free to my knowledge but a friend has told me that changed and they are now syn'ed.

Is this true?

Yes. Since Batchelors changed to the new 'cooks faster' recipe, they gained a syn value
But it's a small syn value so it's hardly anything especially when split between 2 or more.
