Syn-Free Hummus

I've based this recipe around another that I found online, but I've tweaked amounts here and there in order to give maximum flavour. I've also compared this to a similar syn-free recipe I found on the Slimming World website, which tells me that chickpeas, when used in this way, are still a Free food.

Ingredients:
400g tin chickpeas (drained and rinsed)
1 tsp very lazy garlic (in white wine vinegar)
1 tsp ground cumin
0.5 tsp ground coriander
0.25 tsp ground cayenne
1.5 tbsp tomato puree
0.5 tsp cinnamon (optional, I chose not to use it)
1/2 cup fat free natural yoghurt (or vegan/dairy-free alternative)
1.5 tsp lemon juice

Method:

Literally chuck all of this in a bowl and blend with a handheld blender or whizz up in a food processor. You know what hummus is supposed to look like so you'll know when it's been blended enough! Once done, stir through some salt and pepper to suit your own tastes.

Tweak recipe to your heart's content by trying different spice combinations--the base ingredients (chickpeas and yoghurt) stay the same! Enjoy with lots of your favourite Speed vegetables for a healthy, fibre- and protein-packed syn-free snack.

Keeps for up to a week in the fridge (and it gets a little spicier each day).

Yes - hummus is a syn free food when made this way because as a general rule, you will eat the hummus with crudites, so you've got your speed food in the meal.

I've used the Sw version of this recipe lots of times (it's probably in one of my random posts somewhere ) and I love it!!
The only difference is there is no cumin, cinnamon, tomato puree or coriander (I despise coriander!) and I use fresh garlic. I usually add a little salt too, but load in the paprika!!

I've never thought of it that way before!

Re: Very Lazy Garlic - is this syn free?

Yes it's syn free as long as it's the chopped garlic in white wine vinegar.
The garlic paste is 1 syn per tbsp, and the crushed garlic with oil is 1/2 syn per tsp

Thank you. It was the chopped garlic in vinegar in the jar that I was thinking of.

Mmmm I make hummus a lot, but always use Tahini and EV Olive oil and never tinned chickpeas. I love it and am tempted to try this as it's syn free, but I think it may tempt me to have it with grilled pitta bread. Oh the joys of dieting!

A standard wholemeal pitta is 7 syns, and a white one is 7.5
Tahini is 5 syns per tbsp and Olive oil is 6 syns per tbsp.

Work out which would be less syns

Aphrodite, if you're okay with tweaking, make some crisps out of lasagne sheets.

1. Preheat the oven to 180 C / Gas 4. Spray a baking tray with Frylight.
2. Bring a pan of slightly salted water to the boil.
3. Drop a lasagne sheet into the pan and leave for 2 minutes.
4. After the 2 minutes, take the sheet out and cut into squares.
5. Lay the squares on the baking tray. Repeat for the remaining 2 lasagne sheets.
6. Once all of the squares are on the baking tray, spray the tops of them with Frylight and sprinkle on whatever seasoning you fancy.
7. Pop the baking tray into the oven (middle shelf) for 10 minutes (keep checking them as sometimes they go a bit too crisp).
8. Remove the squares from the tray and allow to cool.
9. Enjoy sparingly!

Tweaking is something I just can't do! I'd have to syn these as they should be, the same value of normal crisps...
However, I have debated that if you make these kind of crisps, but had them with your own homemade salsa (tomatoes, onions, peppers, lots of speed!) then they could be ok. Only in moderation though

And I prefer making them with potato rather than lasagne sheets. I've made them a few times with potatoes
