With the weather getting colder this is something that is being practiced!

Cottage Pie

You need:
Low calorie cooking spray
1 large onion chopped
2 garlic cloves finely chopped
500g lean beef mince (5% fat or less)
300g chopped kale
400g tin chopped tomatoes
200g passata
6 tbsp tomato purée
Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp dried mixed herbs
1kg potatoes
200g fat-free natural fromage frais
160g reduced-fat Cheddar cheese, grated

What to do:
Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C Fan/Gas 6.
Boil potatoes in a large saucepan of lightly salted water until tender and drain.
Add the fromage frais, mash until smooth.
Spray another pan with low calorie cooking spray.
Add the onion and garlic, fry for 5 minutes.
Add the minced beef and cook for a few minutes until the beef is brown.
Stir in the kale, chopped tomatoes, passata, tomato purée, Worcestershire sauce and herbs.
Bring to the boil and simmer for 5-10 minutes.
Spoon the beef mixture into an oven proof dish and spread the mash over the top and sprinkle with cheese.
Place into a hot oven for 30 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
Serve with vegetables of your choice.

I have never heard of cottage pie, is it the same as shepherds pie? It sounds really delicious and I would like to make this for my family. Do you think that the beef mince could be substituted with a low-fat ground turkey instead?

This does sound good Emsie. Paisley, I'll bet you could substitute the ground turkey instead of the beef. I do it all the time in different recipes and my family doesn't know the difference.

I have heard of it before but I have never tried it. After reading the recipe it looks pretty simple. When would you normally have this though? Is it more of a lunch/dinner item or is it for anytime of the day?

hi everyone,
I have used turkey, pork and quorn mince before all of which has its own different flavourings! But all as equally as tasty.
It is pretty much the same as Shepards pie, the difference is the meat you use: Cottage pie = Beef mince, Shepards pie = Lamb mince usually.
I make this for tea and normally have left overs for either a lunch or a lazy , quick tea.
