Making soup

It's cold and snowy and I am out of a lot of groceries but don't feel like going out to shop.

I had one small chicken breast and some frozen vegetables so I put on a pot of soup. I threw the chicken and vegetables in with some brown rice. I added some water and chicken bouillon and a can of chick peas. I worried about throwing in the chick peas but it all came out fantastic! It's really tasty.

Now my pantry and freezer are nearly empty but I managed to squeeze out lunch and dinner for today and probably lunch for tomorrow too. I'll worry about shopping tomorrow.

That sounds great! It's such a good way to use up things that you have, and soup is so warming in the winter.

I have never made soup before but I really should give it a go!

Oh, you should give it a try. You'd be surprised how easy it is to make soup. You don't really need a recipe. Just throw whatever you have into the pot. I usually always use bullion, though, for the base.

I will definitely give it a try! I love soup and I think homemade soup would be even nicer!

We make a lot of soup. It's cheap, easy, and far tastier than anything that you get from a can.

I'm glad that you figured a way to avoid going out in the really awful weather.

I find that tomato juice or V8 juice makes a really nice, low calorie, vitamin rich base for soup too. Throw in the juice, add in your veggies and whatever else you want and there you go!

I usually boil the chicken in water. That is what I use for the base. I love homemade soup. I hate taking the chicken off the bone though. When I start with a whole chicken as the base the soup is the tastiest!

It's good that you found something to eat! I agree, you really don't need a recipe to make soup. I bet it tasted wonderful! It sounds like it did.

Just don't leave it in the crock pot too long. I did that once with chicken and rice. It turned into chicken porridge...not quite so yummy. I love rice, but I draw the line at porridge!

I usually boil the remains of a whole chicken for my soup base. It is so good when you have fresh stock. If I don't have any of that on hand I will use chicken stock in the carton. Homemade soup is a cheap, easy and more importantly, healthy meal idea.
