Getting sick

When you get sick, does it knock you off your dieting wagon? I had just started doing Atkins, as in, I was on day 1, and then I got some type of stomach virus and spent all of last night into this morning vomiting. Of course, the only thing I want to drink after vomiting is Sprite, and when my appetite returns, the only thing I want to eat is saltine crackers. Neither of these are Atkins approved!

I would eat the crackers. If you eat something other than those you might end up sick again. I don't do diets like the Atkins diet. I don't usually eat anything that is on my "naughty list" when I am sick.

Yeah, I spent all of yesterday only eating crackers and drinking Sprite, but I don't think I did terribly as I didn't have much of either. Today I've done much better about sticking to low carb/high protein foods.

If all you are eating is crackers and water then you should be fine. Is the Atkins diet the one that says no carbohydrates at all? Someone told me there was one diet plan where they take samples of your blood to see if you've eaten too many carbs.

It knocks me off everything. Last week and a little this week I have had some weird stomach thing going on. This morning was horrible, I barely wanted to move. I have a feeling I might be taking myself to the doctor to find out what is going on since it seems to be happening more and more lately.

Atkins doesn't say that you can't have any carbs, but they do severely limit them in the first two weeks (otherwise known as "induction"). You're not supposed to go over 20 grams of net carbs in the first to weeks on the program.

I know what you mean, Avidian. I've been sick at my stomach and vomited twice so far in the last month. People have been joking that it's morning sickness but I think it's too intermittent for that. Plus, I almost always get sick at night!

I hope you're feeling better soon

Gosh, I hope you're both feeling better. I feel like we just have to listen to our bodies when we're sick. If all you can keep down is crackers and Sprite, then I think that's what you have to do. When it's a choice between getting healthy again or losing weight, I think it's better to do what we need to to get healthy...regardless of "diet".

You're not committing a crime by not sticking to the rules of a particular diet for a few days. Much more important to listen to your body. If it's sick, it needs careful looking after, and cravings while you're ill are worth listening to. Start your diet again when you feel better, but make sure it's not the diet that's making you ill in the first place. Not every diet fits everyone the same way, and some can make you ill even if they work for lots of other people.
