Weight Loss may hurt relationship if only one partner sheds pounds

Did you folks see this article? Researchers found that when one partner loses weight, it may hurt the relationship. The partner who doesn't lose the weight feels nagged, insecure, and threatened by the other one.

Have you dealt with any of this before?

Nagged maybe, but not insecure or threatened

Charls lost 56lbs in the time it took me to lose 10lbs. Always felt bad for eating

A lot of that article rings true for me actually! I think my OHs found me losing weight really hard. I don't talk about diet/fitness much any more cos apparently I was nagging and being self righteous I know he doesn't like his weight and wants to lose some - he just can't be bothered

I can see this happening. However, I try not to nag and live by the old saying, "the only person you can change is yourself." Your significant other has to want to change and no amount of nagging will do any good.

Yeah, I think it's a side effect of one person losing weight and reaching a personal goal. Naturally that person will want to spread or share the wealth. As long as you don't "fat shame" if that's really a thing, I think two partners can work together.

I can see where this might be a problem when both parties are overweight, both parties want to lose weight, yet only one of them actually is. Luckily though, my partner has been very supportive of my weight loss and hasn't become jealous or resentful. I think it has a lot to do with the spouse's security/insecurities to begin with.

That is an interesting article. Luckily my weight loss hasn't caused any problems in our relationship, my husband is fine with it

I am in the same boat, the one where I am the person who has lost weight and when you try to compare apples and oranges you get grapefruit. I always try to be supportive and avoid nagging, hopefully for the most part my better half gets it.
