I think it is just plain rude for people to come over and knock on the door without calling first. If they are lucky I will answer the door, but I feel no obligation to do so. There is really no excuse for it these days since everyone is running around with a phone in their pocket. Close family members are usually excused, though. They are welcome at any time, but they usually know better!
