Welcome to social Slimmers

Have you done SW before? It's pretty easy to follow, and because you can eat so much food you're barely hungry!
Some good pointers I can think of are:
- make sure you drink enough water. 2 litres a day ideally, and that's not counting fizzy drinks or tea/coffee (I got told tea/coffee dehydrate you... not sure how true it is but I don't drink them so I've no idea!)
- make sure you've got at least 1/3 of your plate filled with speed foods. They're the key to losing weight.
- get 1/3 of your plate filled with protein. These foods keep you feeling fuller for longer so will help curb those hunger pangs
- I always lose better when I have my hex a and hex b choice everyday. Make sure you measure these put though. Going over on your Milk or cheese can have an effect on your losses.
- make sure you use at least 5 Syns a day. You will lose more weight by using some of them rather than none at all. You don't have to use all 15 everyday, but you should use at least 5 if you can. Incorporate them into your meals if you don't want to be eating chocolate or something. Sauces, dressings, anything with a couple of Syns in will help you lose weight.

As for keeping track, you can create a food diary thread on here and we can help where you need us to, or give any advice we might think of

Best of luck on your journey!

Hiya, thank you for your reply. I haven't done this before no, I am a recovering anorexic. Back in 2014 I was pretty sick and diagnosed with non clinical anorexia. When I started eating again I gained alot of weight as I'd stuffed my metabolism up and wasn't eating properly and recently I started struggling with eating again and stopped pretty much all together for 3 weeks. I dont want to get sick again so decided I needed to do something about it and with slimming world's focus being on a change of attitude as opposed to a diet it seemed like a good idea. The thing I'm struggling with is the amount I need to eat and feeling bad about the "syns". The food is pretty nice and tastes almost clean though which I really like. X

I'm sorry to hear you've struggled in the past, but I love seeing that you are determined to get better and improve your relationship with food.
We've all had poor relationships with food, hence us all being here, and which ever side of that relationship we've been on, it's a daily struggle to get out of old habits and think in a different way.

Would I be right to assume you've joined with an actual group, or have you done it online? If you've joined with a group, have you spoken to your consultant about your past struggles and your recovery?

The best thing I can advise I guess would be to take it in small steps.
It does look daunting that you can eat so much food, but it's just that all that food is available to you should you want it. There shouldn't be anyone telling you you HAVE to eat huge platefuls. You make the plan fit around you and your preferences.

With regards to the Syns, is there anything that you really enjoy that isn't on your free food lists?
It doesn't have to be much. Maybe some yogurts that have a syn value? Or any sauces that you'd like with your meals?
You shouldn't feel bad about Syns, but I can see that you may think you should feel that way because of your history.

I have very little knowledge and experience of anorexia personally, so I hope you'll bear with me and my questions

Yea I've spoken to my consultant and she was brilliant, but like most people, including my partner at times, because it's not a physical disability and cannot be seen it's incredibly difficult to describe, explain and I'd imagine to understand. Not to mention that although the symptoms and fundamentally the same the triggers, emotions and levels it's taken to are hugely vast. I have PTSD which is what triggered the anorexia. When I'm having a bad day it's really difficult to see past eating as a weakness. It feels like I'm not in control and "others were right". When I'm having a good day it seems absurd that yoghurt makes me cry.
Many people who become aware I'm not eating as much as I should assume I'm being stupid and "starving myself to get skinny". The truth is theres no physical reason I cannot eat but the psychological barriers it puts up to an ability and need that is taken for granted by the majority of people is incredibly overwhelming. It doesn't matter if it's SP, P, S, Syns, a total no no or negative syns (what is that btw?) it's the same result. It's not what I'm eating, it's the process of.
You can ask as many questions as you like

Grrr.... spent ages typing out a post and it wouldn't post it!
I can't remember what it said either
I think it was something along the lines of this...

Although I can't understand fully and sympathise with your struggles, I do understand what you mean when you say it's psychological rather than physical.

You've got some huge hurdles to overcome, and I really hope SW can help you improve your relationship with food.
I know it's massively easy to say and not very easy when you've got the psychological factors playing on your mind, but if you have a bad day, try not to beat yourself up about it. You are only human, and you are combating some serious issues at the same time.

The best advice I could give, would be to take the plan one meal at a time. Sometimes it's easier that way, and especially if you have a bad day, one meal at a time may be the best you can think of.
