Well I get paid tomorrow so I go for my weekly food shop Saturday. Really looking forward to it (never thought I would see the day when I was looking forward to food shopping). Looking to change up my Healthy A and Bs this week and increase my protein to see how that follows next week.

Hey All,

Well, I'm not going to lie, my suspected fears were realised last night. After one night out last week (the only night that wasn't entirely on plan) and getting through to third week of Body Magic Bronze (cycling 6 miles a day Monday - Friday), I gained 1 lb.

I know that Body Magic takes its time to show losses but it was REALLY hard not to give up entirely. A couple of the girls at my group are gym people and they said it can level or lead to gains before it falls of and part of my mind went "What if I haven't got the strength to last that long?"

Don't get me wrong, I like my cycling to work and I am finding plan easier and easier but it still doesn't change the overwhelming feeling of 'rock on chest' when you see the numbers going the wrong way.

Sorry to be a negative nancy about it but I feel some times its as important to talk about how you feel when things have gone wrong as when they go right.

One good thing is I can say I did not go home and go off the rails. I measured out and syned myself a large gin and made it my mission to change up my As and Bs a bit to see if that makes a difference and to try a few speed days this week so watch this space!

Hanging on to Hope!

Thanks.

This is super common; you're not alone! And it's definitely important to talk about when things go wrong. If you get it out of your system, it's easier to find that determination again.

What I will say is this: there could be MANY reasons for that gain. The fact that you're doing so much Body Magic is AMAZING! However, as we all know, muscle weighs more than fat. If you're forming muscle through your daily cycling, the numbers on the scales aren't going to have the same meaning as if you were just losing pounds of fat. Also, when your muscles are repairing post-exercise, your body retains more water in order for them to do so. Make sure you're drinking enough throughout the day (a HydrateM8 or Bevgo bottle would be useful for this, as they have the times written down the side).

Lastly, are you doing your measurements? Because of your commitment to the Body Magic part of SW, there may come a week or even a few weeks in a row where you don't see losses, but you WILL see differences in your measurements. If you haven't already, take your starting measurements and do this every week as well as your normal weigh-in.

Hope this helps!

Hi Kay,

Thanks very much for your support. I have appreciated all the input from everyone since I started this thread. It does help to feel I am not alone.

My legs are definitely getting stronger and slightly more defined already so I suspect I am gaining muscle, which could partially explain the gain. Water wise, I have a glass of fizzy water with no added sugar squash in the morning before I leave and then have a 75cl bottle at work that I refill between 3 and 5 times a day (in addition to having large mugs of herbal tea).

I hadn't considered doing my measurements because I was never really sure of where to measure (I know that sounds stupid). I do feel my body getting stronger and my consultant advised I would see body shape changes. Will invest in a measuring tape and start.

I think its because Slimming World a lot of the time is ALL about numbers and when they aren't moving or going the wrong way its a real kick in the teeth when you are trying to work hard.

Will keep fighting though!

It does get annoying when you are trying to lose weight and get fit, because the exercise has an adverse effect on the scales, however the other ladies in your group are correct, as is Kay.
Even though you've not done your measurements (which I never did when I first started because I had no clue where to measure!) you may have noticed that your clothes might feel a little loser in some places?
I did a rejoin last night, and although I forgot to do my measurements after group, I'll do them tonight and I'll measure the tops of my thighs, the tops of my arms, my waist, my hips and my bust.

You should be so proud that you didn't let your frustrations get to you and go have a big ol' binge! That takes a lot of willpower and determination, and well done you for not doing it

It is annoying that they are mostly about numbers, but they should also be all about the NSV's (Non-scale victories) They are just as important

You're doing fabulous, keep your chin up hun. And I hope you see a good result next week

Hi Sarah,

Thanks again for your positive input! I won't have chance to buy a measuring tape until tomorrow afternoon but will measure then and then measure weekly after slimming world on a Monday (that way even if the numbers aren't going the right way I can have some good news).

My weaknesses previously was letting one bad week turn into a landslide on the syn front and I know all that will lead to is bigger gains next week so I just don't let it get to me as much (it is helped to have the positivity from you guys).

That's why I am logging every bike journey I make so that I know I am working towards a NSV of the body magic awards. That way I know even if the numbers are not very positive I am still feeling a reward.

Will let you guys how it goes next Monday. Have also gone back to a challenge my consultant set a few weeks ago of less than 10 syns a day and 10 different types of free food a day. That plus the mixing of As and Bs, I can't lose! :-D

Changing your foods around is always a great idea, and I love the sound of the challenge... I may have to attempt that myself (this week's already planned, but I'll do my best!)

I like having challenges, it means I know I am keeping the food side on track and I can see it every week in my food diary!

Hello All,

Seeking some further advice from those like me, who are seeing body magic affect them the wrong way on the numbers. How long did you see the numbers plateau or gain? I know its different for everyone but I just want to get an idea on how this kind of thing works so I don't spend months struggling through Mondays (weigh in night) thinking nothing is going to change.

Also, I read that protein immediately (20-30 mins) after exercise helps and having a carbohydrate rich meal the night before. Has anyone else found this?

I am very much a novice to trying Slimming World this way. Last time I was at Slimming World I was walking to work (only 10 mins) and was all about what I was eating and I lost 12 weeks consecutively. The exercise approach appears to be having the reverse effect and I could just do with a sign of hope that this is not going to all be in vain!

Thanks again for your help. :-)

4 weeks is usually the average for the exercise having an effect on the losses.
Last time I was going to the gym I found it took maybe 4-5 weeks to balance out I think? I was going 5 mornings a week, doing between 45-60 minutes of exercise though, which was a drastic change to what I'd been doing!

I can't advise on the protein after exercise though, I've never gone that deep in to that side of it

It is annoying that the exercise affects the losses, but the exercise helps tone up your body so whilst you're losing the weight so it isn't all in vain
