Motivation regarding slimming world

Hey guys

I am planning to join slimming world soon because i have lost motivation in everything. Really disappointed in life nothing seems to work. Can someone guide me to how it works and what usually happens in the group meetings and above all does it work and how much effect do we see each week. Because unless it shows an effect it will further demotivate me..

Thanks again

Hi sunny1266,
Hope you get your mojo back x

I joined SW last January (7th) and had lost 8 stone and 2 lbs 49 weeks later.

I didn't join to learn how to cook as I am a pretty good cook but rather I joined for the discipline of having a stranger weigh me each week. I was determined that I would not put on a 1lb during that time. One, because of sheer bloody-mindedness and two, I didn't want to waste my time and money.

I joined on my own and was met with friendly faces and a great atmosphere and now I have made some firm friends out of joining.

If you have a good leader you will be given great help and if you need further help I think there are many on this site who are willing and able to help too.

How it works?
You are given a booklet with foods you can eat freely, others you measure, and others you can eat but have a 'syn' value which is really just a simple way for us to understand calories without having to do a lot of adding up.

What usually happens at group meetings?
You go in and pay.
Then you get weighed. This information is between you and SW and (in my experience) no mention is made of the weight you are at any weigh-in.
After weigh-in is finished there is a group meeting where everyone sits around and discusses their week in food, if they need motivation, if they had any great healthy food etc. It's very relaxed.

I've notice some people saying here that they don't like having their leader mention them and how they've done that week (something like, in my experience again, "So sunny1266, you had a great week with 2lb off, share with the group what you ate this week that gave you this great result". I know from my own group that if the person doesn't want this and tells the leader (or in my case I told the leader on behalf of a friend who is shy and didn't want it) then this is respected so you can just sit and listen. Everyone gives a wee round of applause whether the person mentioned has gained or lost.

Then at the end of the group meeting Slimmer of the Week is announced (this is the person who has had the most loss that week AND a loss or maintain (stayed the same weight) the previous week.

At the end of the month Slimmer of the Month is announced.

These people get an award card and a star for their book. (See samples on the bottom of some posts here ~ mine being one of them).

"Because unless if shows an effect it will further demotivate me ..." you need to put some work in too and if you do, you will get results. :-)

What helped me, food wise, was making a big pot of veg soup (onions, leeks, turnip, carrots and celery and boiling water) and using it as a filler any time I felt hungry.

Good luck x

Daisy's given a great explanation.
You are not the youngest there by any means. We've just had a 16 year old join.
There are people of all ages at these groups, all the way up to people in their 70's (and probably older in some places!)
There is even a 'Young Slimmer of the Year' award which is open to those under the ages of 21 (if I remember correctly!) Young people are always welcome to join

I've been at SW for 6 years as part of the social team, and I've seen plenty of young people join through those years. They are always welcomed by the rest of the group and, as a whole, we try to make them feel included as much as possible.

The thing you've got to remember about these groups is that everyone is there for the same reason. To be healthier, lose weight, and try to stay on track as much as possible.

Thanks sarahc4536 :-)

And sunny 1266, we have plenty of under 18s here too so there will more than likely be your age group at whichever group you join BUT as sarah says, everyone is there for the same reason and age doesn't even factor in it.

And well done you addressing your weight at a young age and the best of luck x

Hi Sunny,

I agree with Daisy, well done for doing something early. Its easy to just ignore it, I know that during my years at uni I gained a lot of weight and in the few years after I just ignored it until I was out of breath climbing the stairs!

I joined group with a friend and found my consultant to be great. He'd been through a big slimming world transformation himself so he knew how 'low points' felt and how to answer my questions.

I can't speak for other groups but I was concerned before going about being judged or mocked but I have met with nothing but friendly faces and support.

Wish you all the best and can always seek support on here as a 2nd line (I have found that Sarah C has really helped me!)

:-)
