Tofu treat

I chanced upon some firm tofu in a small deli near my house so thought I'd give it a whirl. I have tried the silky type before and thought it was pretty awful, but this is much nicer. The assistant said to fry it but I ate it cold with tomatoes, cucumber strips and a little soy sauce.

I tried firm tofu for the first time a couple of weeks ago but I'm undecided as to whether I like it or not. I marinaded it in soy sauce and then fried it but it didn't go crispy on the outside as I was expecting, so when I mixed it in with the rest of my stir fry, every time I got a mouthful of it there was this weird squidgey texture that just didn't feel right. I probably did it totally wrong! Has anyone fried it, and if so, what was your technique to get it crispy on the outside yet still soft on the inside?

Ha ha, at least there are two of us doing it wrong in that case!

I think texture plays a bigger part in eating than a lot of people realise - ever since I was a child I can remember disliking things purely because they felt unpleasant in my mouth, even if the taste was nice. I still feel this way about a lot of things (not just tofu!), but I wish there was a way to get over it.

I'm like it with fruits, I like the taste, but the textures, especially ones with skin like apples, plums etc! I'll eat them peeled, but don't like biting through the skin!

Do you know what my absolute worst texture thing is? The jelly that they put in pork pies (not that I eat them much any more)...it's just foul! I would always dissect the pie and remove every bit, but if I missed some and ended up with it in my mouth, I'd have to spit it out - there's no way I could swallow it!

That used to be my favourite bit of pork pies makes my tummy turn thinking about it now!
