Potato substitutes

Lately I've had a terrible craving for potatoes. Something about a baked potato is seriously tempting me right now. I've considered mashing cauliflower, but I don't know if it would work. Anyone tried something similar before?

I love potatoes too. I have tried cauliflower and it doesn't even compare to a potato. Sorry, maybe you will like it though. I try to not smother my potato with butter and sour cream.

Are you trying to avoid potatoes altogether? I found moderation and varied meals stop me craving things to the point of needing because I hadn't 'banned' them.

My wife game me cauliflower instead of mashed potato and I didn't notice. She thought I was joking when she asked me. I didn't detect any difference, weird but it works.

Was the texture not obvious? Would depend what it's to go with I guess, I probably would just steam the cauliflower as normal.... you have to add milk and butter to this I believe? I might try it actually!

Some alternatives to potatoes I have heard:
Chips alternative - Oven baked yams
Roast potatoes alternative - Roasted turnips
Crisps alternative - Kale oven cooked, doesn't appeal to me lol

you can cook cauliflowers many ways ...like rice or even like a steak or mash potatoes etc...

I will said dont think it will be bad for you to have a potatoes jacket once if you crave it ...specially if you use light butter or light cream cheese on it

I'd suck on a no carb diet lol carbs also give you energy. You can be healthy and have things you enjoy eh?

I love potatoes very much! and to my taste it can't be replaced;-)) i've tried cauliflower and even celery root boiled in milk ( -also "replacement" for the mushed potatoes). It was all not the same! But i completely agree with Wobbles! You may eat potatoes in moderation

Hi, celeriac is a good choice for chips or mash. Add bit of paprika. Other than that squashes work well. Not sure how they all rate on the carb scale. I love mix roasted veg carrots, parsnips, sweet potato, swede. With a lovely rich veg gravy, lots of garlic and deglaze my roast veg tray with vegi bouillion scarping all the crispy bits, normally i might add bit of cornflour but am sure there grain free thickners out there.

Swede is a good replacement as it feels nice and starchy when you eat it, also lovely mashed with carrot in place of mashed potatoes. I love it, and so do my kids. (sadly I haven't seen one swede since I moved to Denmark - and I look all the time! haha) I know swede is a superfree food on Slimming World, but don't know if it's ok to have on your diet plan but might be worth checking out.

Good luck finding a replacement Poppy. x
