Nurse says they don't work

The company my husband works for brings a nurse in every few months to keep an eye on all of the workers and he gets a visit. They were talking about how many guys in the plant are all starting low carbohydrate diets but the nurse said none work. ...so I am wondering has anyone here done a low carbohydrate diet before and it only worked short term (backing this theory)? Did you gain the weight back?

Sounds like that nurse was offering a personal opinion rather than a medical one and she shouldn't have done that.

I'm diabetic so a low carbohydrate diet is very important in my life. The same is true for many people. I feel healthier without them because carbs turn to sugar and sugar doesn't burn properly for me and it goes straight to fat.

Everyone is an individual so what works for one person may not work for another. It works for me.

Yes, I've done low carb more than once and yes, I always wind up gaining the weight back because I can't seem to stick to the recommended carb levels for maintenance.

I seem to have a fairly low threshold. Once I start consuming more than about 60 grams of carbs per day, I start gaining the weight back. The problem is, once I start adding carbs back into my diet, I find myself wanting more!!

I just discussed this with my sister and her husband who have gained a lot of weight after being off of this diet or lifestyle. They are craving more carbs because once you give your body a little, it wants more. That's why it is so hard for people to stick with it. I think it definitely does work but people are brainwashed and enticed around every corner with fast food and junk food.

I think it does work but it's got to be more of a lifestyle change rather than a quick-fix low carb diet, as it can be so tempting to go back to old habits and pile the weight back on again.
I am trying to stick to a lower carb diet and have found that fat and protein is quite satiating, so it does reduce a lot of cravings, but not all of them!


It was probably just the nurse's individual opinion as she probably meets lots of people who have maybe gone about it in the wrong way and not had success with it. Different things work for different people though

I'd you reduce carbs then dive back in to old habits you're going to put the weight back on. Any diet IMO can be reversed if you then go back to old eating habits. If you want the weight off or to maintain you have to be committed to life style changes where food is concerned.

No carb diet rules annoy me I think this is the wrong way to go about things long term.

Complex carbs are the best options.

I would agree. I lost the majority of my weight (around 80 lbs) on a low carb diet and I have only gained back about 8% and that has been over a 12 year time span and mostly just due to me being lazy with my foods.

Actually low carb is the only diet that works for me. my fat goes away rapidly. however i often ten to gain a few pounds after quitting.

After quitting I gain ALL the weight back plus an extra bonus. Which proves for me that low carb is the way to go. In my view low carb is sustainable but when I'm on vacation I usually spiral out of control and mess it all up. Some discipline would surely help.
