Low Carb Diets - What's the max amount of carbs?

So I've been looking into low carb diets and came across a recipe book that tells you how many carbs in grams there are in a serving

I have no idea how they work it out but I know carbs are what make you put weight on. If I was to consider carb counting can anyone tell me what target I should aim for?

I have read lots about carbs and low carbs diets. Every diet has different proportion of carbs per day. I guess you just need to chose one diet and follow it. I guess the main rule for carbs is: less sweet fruits, no potatoes, pasta, MORE vegetables (vegetables have good carbs)

Not picked a low carb diet. Not sure I'd even do one, but I'm on slimming world and things like pasta and potatoes are syn free. I just can't get my head around some of the choices SW give you when they are obviously carb high :/

From what we are all told limiting carbs are key to losing weight, so was just wondering how many carbs is considered normal without putting on or losing weight? Anything less than that should help with weight loss regardless of diet plan, right?

I hate to say it, but SW have no idea :-) Sure, some people get success, but the plan is so generalised that it's unreal.

The lowdown on carbs is really this.

Unless one is doing high intensity activity, then starchy carbs (pasta, white potatoes, white rice etc) should not be a daily staple, more of a treat. People just don't understand human physiology and energy sources, and the SW club leaders are just part of a franchise, and have no real nutritional knowledge (I know, I know a few of them in my area).

Iy's a money making business that has almost become seen as a national institution or some sort of charity. I shake my head, but no disrespect to the people thaty go and make progress, I just think SW are not the greatest when it comes to providing people with the actual eating plans and support they often need.

Re the carbs, low carb is a difficult one to pin down. Ketogenic LC is usualy under 50g of carbs per day.

But, if you don't do intense exercise, and are essentially sedentary, then 100g carbs per day is plenty, and you can get that pretty much all from non-starchy veggies and couple of bits of fruit per day.

100g is low-carb when you consider that the general population eat around 4-500 grams per day !!!!!

I am trying to manage my blood sugar and keep it at a good level and am doing pretty well with that. The key to that, for me, is to keep my carb counts fairly low and if I am going to eat them, then I need to do it early in the day while I am active and moving around.

But eating them early in the day will turn off fat burning completely. Unless you are doing really high intensity activity they are not going to get 'burned off', but your brain, heart, and some nervous tissue do utilise carbs as a fule source rather than fat.

I've always thought the lower the carb count, the better. I've gone on and off low carb so many times, my head is spinning (and I am not losing weight, either). When I'm "on," I try to stick to under 30 grams of carbs per day.

Stephen, what do you recommend for an older, sedentary female?

Very low carb can work for a while for overweight people. It helps reduce body weight and improved insulin resistance, but there comes a time that for many, it stops working.

Everyone is individual in their tolerance of carbohydrate, but for the sedentary, something in the 100g per dar range, achieved almost exclusively from non-starchy vegetables and a little fruit is a good starting point.

How many calories a day are you eating?

Thanks for the rule of thumb. I've been stumped for a while on what is good as far as daily carb intake. It's difficult to manage as bread, pasta, and potatoes are some of my favorite foods, but beefing up on the veggies has definitely helped.

A low carb diet is one of the effective ways to lose weight and look healthy.

A low carb diet is nothing but a diet that limits the amount of carbohydrates from your daily menu. a low carb diet not just reduces your weight.

A low carb diet reduces the risk factors associated with diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Common sources of naturally occurring carbohydrates include whole grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, milk. when you limit the amount of carbohydrates from your menu, you simultaneously focus on protein-rich foods like meat, fish, poultry, non-starchy vegetables.

A person's carbohydrate intake per day depends on his age, gender, body composition, activity levels, food habits, personal preferences and metabolic rate. Even though no scientific studies have explained about how much is the required carb intake per day in a low-carb diet, it is said that consuming 100-150 grams of carbohydrates per day is a healthy choice. Under this your an include all vegetables , some fruits and some amount of healthy starches like potatoes, sweet potatoes, rice and oats.
