Lifelong dieter

Hi. I have been trying to lose weight for over 40 years. If only I was as fat now as I thought I was when I started dieting as I was 4 stone lighter then. The last 15 years or so I have been around the same weight losing a few pound and then regaining it. My trouble is that I want to cry on eating what I like but still lose weight and I know that's ridiculous. I'm a binger, a comfort eater when I get wound up or stressed and that happens easily. I feed and taxi grandkids a lot and never really know until the day what's happening so planning is not easy . I don't like salads and love carbs, lack motivation and get up and go. I've tried, WW, Slimming World several times but can't or should that be wont , stick to it.
And there you have it, all my excuses for being the blob I am. Thanks for reading this and hopefully I can get my mojo from everyone on here.

Hey, it might be helpful to try and limit the carbs in your diet as opposed to cutting them out. Perhaps you can have one carb-heavy meal but stay with a certain gram intake that allows you to lose weight.

I think you've got to get to the bottom of why you won't stay on the diets. Your thoughts create emotions and your emotions then influence your actions. So if you think you are not staying on the diet, work backwards from that and find the emotion that you feel, then work backwards from that and find the thought that causes that. Then you have to really understand and give yourself some grace for having that thought in the first place. Then figure out what you can do to change it.

For example:

Current Action: Not sticking to diet.

Current Possible Emotions causing the Action: Disgust, Apathy, Anxiety, Apprehension, Displeasure, Guilt

Current Possible Thoughts causing the Emotions: Dieting won't help. I don't like these foods. I need to eat to feel good. I don't have time to diet.

Then, you give yourself compassion and understanding to deal with those thoughts. Imagine that it is not you who has the bad thoughts, it is someone else. Deal with your thoughts and work through them the same way you would try to help a dear friend. When you are ready and fully know why those types of thoughts exist, you turn it around!

Proposed Action: Stick to the Diet

Proposed Emotions: Pride, Well Being, Satisfaction, Excitement, Passion.

Proposed Thoughts: Eating better foods helps my mind and body. No matter if I lose weight or not, I will be healthier from eating better foods. The weight loss will be a bonus on my way to a healthier life. I can still eat the foods that I like. I can try out different ways of preparing foods to turn them into something I would like. I can find ways to prepare the things that I do like in a way that is healthier.

This method is based on cognitive behavioral therapy which helps us recognize and separate our thoughts from ourselves while replacing those negative thoughts with positive or redirecting thoughts. Hope it helps as it has helped me in all aspects of my life.

Thank you for your reply. Certainly makes sense and I will try and put into practice. First thing to do is to get myself to stop, and take that step back to think before I just rush out and eat. Thanks again
