High Weights & Low Reps

I used to do medium weights and higher reps, but I was talking to a personal trainer and she advised lifting heavy weights for two sets of 8-12 reps. Since I've done that it seems like muscle is starting to develop faster.

Does anyone else do the same or do you prefer to stick with lower weights and higher reps?

I think Holly and Charls are the main ones that do strength (sure they'll be about soon). I would have thought smaller weights and more reps would be safer than bulking up too fast... but having said that I don't do strength (more of cardio than anything).

I read somewhere that it's better to do higher weights and less reps, but tbh I don't know why! I'm guessing your muscles get more of a work out with a higher weight?

The general theory is if you want to tone, then you do more reps at a lower weight, if you want to build muscle then go heavier and do less reps

So say you do 3 sets of 15 @ 10kg ... You could try 4 sets of 8 @ 20kg

i was told by my gym instructor to do high weights, low reps. Her exact words were that if i can do 3x12 on a machine easily then I'm not lifting heavy enough. So now i try and get that burn in the last rep. I can really see in my legs where the muscle is.building tho!

See on my program at the moment there are some things I can higher reps and weights but the Bicep Curls and Tricep Pushdowns/rope he has told me to ONLY increase reps!

Guess it depends what your aim is right now my second program is still to lose a few more pounds then I will see what is next... probably after the summer holidays now.

He's only saying that because he doesn't want you to get bigger guns than him

I am glad I read this. I am taking a toning/cardio class twice a week. The instructor is always pushing us to increase our weights. I don't want to build muscle I just want to tone my arms and legs. I think I will stick to the lighter weights.

I talked to the trainer about the possibility of bulking up, since I don't want to do that either. She said it's a fallacy that women will easily bulk up; our body chemistry makes it harder to do so. High weights will give you definition faster (as long as you are eating right) but won't make you huge. She's not huge so I tend to believe her.
