Hello! I am a fellow dieter; however, i have/had hashimoto's.

Backstory on myself:
i have always had a slight weight problem, about 30 lbs overweight or so. My childhood doctor never checked my thyroid and my mom didn't know to ask. instead, when i was 14, the doctor prescribed me diet pills (phentermine to be exact); as if it was my eating habits causing my weight gain. at this time i was about 5'4' or so and 150 lbs. of course, i nearly stopped eating altogether and had no appetite. i lost 30 lbs that summer. after i got off the pills, i slowly gained weight back. by age 17, i was 5'5" and 165 lbs, so 10-15 lbs heavier than i was before the diet pills. i began exercising more and followed a strict 750 calorie diet- which is horrible but i had no idea at the time. i lost 30 pounds once again and kept that off for about a year until i stopped exercising and was lax with my diet (although i seemed to always be aware of calories after counting them for years). i would say i rarely exceeded 1500 calories most days. i gained 60 lbs back this time over a 2 year period.. finally i went to see a doctor on my own, which he decided to do blood work based on my symptoms (extremely cold and tired, etc.). I was diagnosed with hashimoto's which i most likely have had for 10 years. i got my associates in nutrition because i have always been fascinated with it. but throughout school, there was hardly a mention on thyroid disease.. BMR do not seem to apply since mine right now is "1500" but if i eat that much, i start gaining weight.. they don't factor in having no thyroid activity with a sluggish metabolism. nutritionists are not helpful in this area since they believe i am starving myself. but the only way for me to lose weight is to maintain a 1200 or less calorie diet with exercise. i am also incorporating low-carb with high fat and protein. so far i have been doing good and resisting the cravings and i am now working at a job with very low stress. i have lost 15lbs and my thyroid antibodies are 0. any thoughts? just wanted to share my story and to see if anyone has done carb and calorie restriction with high fat and if you have lost weight?

Hi lovely

Personally I find such low calorie diets work short term but like you have experienced its not long term solution. However I am not familiar with thyroid issues that can for some cause problems with weight loss or even gain which I have just read both are a symptom of hashimoto... weight gaining then unwanted loss, you can't win feelings I bet is very real for you it's hard enough so I feel for you.

Have you had any advice from your GP without using medications if you don't want to use that route again? From a little research it's your metabolism you want to boost. Natural ways to boost the metabolism:
Exercise (which from what you've said very much worked for you)
Certain food boost your metabolism like coffee zinc chili ( I chili in everything haha)
Protein rich food (I try and eat high protein and find great results)
Hydration plays a big factor 3 litres a day min 2 litres a day ... it works!
Drink green and peppermint tea

What exercise do you participate in out of curiosity and frequency?

Don't under eat and balance the fats, carbs and protein in my opinion based on your daily activity.

I'll look out for your reply.

I went from a size 20 to 10 but I've gone up again because I stopped balancing and I keep dipping in and out of exercise! ARGH! so I do kinda know what it's like and this isn't the first time I've gone into yoyo mode!

Thanks so much for your reply!! I love doing Zumba which is a dancing workout! I also love using the elliptical. I have been doing it about once a week for 45 minutes but I need to do way more. I agree that is the best route above everything. I drink about 64 oz of water a day but I need to be drinking probably closer to 80. I totally agree with water intake being important! My current GP is weaning me off the thyroid meds because my antibodies are at 0 and it seems like my thyroid is trying to work!!! Fingers crossed lol. On low carb I feel so much better. I’m slowly losing weight but it’s a lifestyle change. I’m hoping low carb will be the answer for me. I occasionally let myself have a bite of something if I really want it, or I just make some really nice deserts using erythritol! So they are low calorie and low carb 😍 I really do appreciate your feedback!! Good luck with your weight loss too!!

The water thing sound so easy but it's really hard to get into that habit isn't it. I am a sucker for coffee over water yet I know it works.

I starved myself of carbs at one point and ate very minimum and too felt better BUT then I started losing weight I didn't want to lose and added them into my diet and I realised they play a good part in my diet but moderation and timing played a big part of it. Slow releasing carbs, good carbs are both energy sources. I would have my 'carb days' on my high intensity days and high fat on my workouts that were low-medium intensity... both days were high protein.

Unfortunately after injury I fell off the wagon and my problem was cocktails and carb overload ooooo and cheese I stopped caring so now I'm in a lazy or too tired rut because I can't dedicate the time I once could for training.

Fingers tightly crossed for you coming off your meds.

My dessert was no sugar raspberry jelly with that low fat squirty cream and if I felt naught a meringue and if extra naughty some cadburys buttons or alike ontop ... living on the edge eh

Haha!! What a great post 🤣 I like your carb idea combined with the type of workout!! I may have to start allowing myself more HEALTHY carbs!! I’ve been sticking to my 1200 calorie so that’s a plus!!! Fingers crossed!!!!

I can't do without carbs ... I felt better, I felt less bloated but I realised getting back into them they did play a positive part of my healthy eating. My coach was awesome, he got me out of the 1200 calorie rut and I was eating 2000 calories a day AND high fats AND carbs until I got to a point I had to up my carbs, he trained me well food wise but I do have to start that routine from the start again because my body fat was down lean up ... now my lean is down, body fat up but yep the timing was important.

It took me a while to realise 1200 diets actually hindered my progress in the long run. My body fat (not weight) reduced faster eating .... If my memory is right to start with I was 1400 on low or no exercise days 1600 on days I exercised but to be fair most of my sessions are medium to high intensity. I'd have extra carbs based on how I felt but also listening to your body and not the calories you have scanned in each day are important too.

Wow Zumba is hard going, well done you. Do you have the opportunity to gradually increase from 1 workout a week to 3 minimum, well so they say.

You have to have something you want now and then otherwise finding a new you becomes a chore and a punishment I think.

Good luck x

Yes...doing physical activity that is fun & enjoyable to you is key. Boring activity is not sustainable. Hour long sessions are also not necessary. Short sessions are also beneficial.
