Aerobic exercise is highly recommended for those who are diabetic ... anything from a brisk walk to running. Actually exercise at the end of the day is recommended for everyone.

You can exercise to your level of fitness and or capability.

Swimming
Water aerobics
Jogging
Running
Cycling
Stationary bike
Dancing
Skating

Outdoor activities such a climbing.

Interestingly strength/resistant training makes your body more sensitive to insulin and can lower you blood glucose.

I don't believe there are any rules of exercise just because you are diabetic more points in the direction of positives if you do exercise!

Start with walking. Making any dramatic changes in the lifestyle for a diabetic is not good. Lifestyle, eating habits and exercise changes should be all gradual because in diabetes, medicines are prescribed according to a person's daily routine. So, if you start working out a lot then your blood sugar levels will lower naturally but because your medicines will still remain the same so it can affect your health. You should always consult your doctor and get your prescription altered accordingly.

Alongside Wobbles list dancing is also good. The best thing about dancing is that it doesn't feel like exercise. Dancing is a great total-body workout that helps raise good cholesterol and lower bad cholesterol. It also helps control blood sugar, making it a great activity for someone with diabetes. You could dance around the house or take a zumba class.

newbie

hello All,

have decided to join the forum for help and support.
have started my new journey already in January, but still not loosing much weight.
i need to loose 7kg, and after going to a personal trainer, have been going to the gym like crazy, first thing in the morning before going to work.
get up around 5 , go to the gym for about 1h30 mn, where i do 45 mn cardio and then weight training. at least 4x or 5x time a week.
i have decided to stop looking at the kgs lost, but have been measuring muscle growth versus fat loss. slow, 4.5 % body fat lost and almost 5 % muscle gain.
before the summer vacation, i went and got myself some weights to take on holiday with me, and have trained 3 x that week. still another week to go, but this time, i have nothing with me, but my running shoes. have been getting up early and going for big walks. i want the next 6 months to be all about looking better, i don't want to focus on numbers anymore, i just want to tone up a lot. BMI IS overweight. my struggle is drinking so for a few months i have quit driking during the week, and would allow myself drinking during parties with friends and family. is this really what is stopping me to reach my goal ? i want to keep my motivation high, and have good and bad days. any tips ? i just feel like i have tried it all. i don't wan to do any crazy diet, just get my daily nutrition right, quantity right. that is my struggle.
give me pasta and i can eat the whole pot .
give me a glass of wine, and i want another one
anyway, i want to beleive this journey is just begining for me despite the last 7 months.
anyone out there, feeling the same ?

thanks,
nathalie

Weight loss is just a term nowadays if you are committed & consistent in your pursuit of achieving it. I would recommend to first set your mind to losing weight, plan your days & create new habits that can help you with your weight loss journey.

From what I understand a diabetic can still do normal regular exercises, so aerobic exercises that make the heart beat fast such as: swimming, jogging, tennis and cycling.

What I would say is that make sure that you have enough to eat 30 - 1.5 hours before exercising as I had a relative that had diabetes and she had to eat regularly to ensure her blood sugar did not get low.

I think building up to more intense exercises is the best solution, therefore perhaps brisk walking would be better to start because it gets the body used to elevating the blood around.

Ideally you should be exercising for around 30 - 45 mins 5/6 times a week, however you could always start with 20 mins for say 3/6 days a week and gradually increase. If you have any concerns it's perhaps better that you see your physician first before taking action.
