What is the first thing you check on food labels?

The first thing I check on labels is the amount of carbs. High carbs usually indicates a lot of sugar. Calories per serving and sugar are the next items I look at on the label. After that I check to see the types of fats they've used and try to avoid stuff with trans fats.

If the package makes it past that first test and I haven't already reshelved it, I end up standing in the store aisle reading the whole label and ingredient list. I guess that is something everyone should do regardless if they are dieting or not.

I usually check on the sugar and the ingredients. For some reason, our wonderful food companies think that putting high fructose corn syrup in everything will make us eat more. They are right, but it also makes us fat.

If I also can't pronounce most of the ingredients, then I know it's not for me!

I check everything -- calories, fat grams, carbs, fiber, sugar, and protein. (Okay, maybe that's not everything, ha.) I try not to eat anything that has more than about 10 grams of fat in it, more than about 30 grams of fiber, and I try to keep sugar to an absolute minimum. I also favor high fiber stuff, where it has 3-5 grams of fiber per serving.

I read everything too but what I was wondering about was what is the first thing that you check. If I start to read the label and immediately see that the carb count is really high, I don't even bother reading any further.

Yep, agreed. Carbs first and if they aren't too high, then I check the sugars. If I am satisfied with that, then I don't bother to check the fats and the rest of the ingredients. But then, I usually buy in a routine, not a lot of "new" foods, so I don't check labels all that often.

I check the sugars first. I guess I am odd that way. For the kids I don't want them to be overloaded and stuck on a sugar high so anything coming into the house needs to be on my okay list. Then I check the price, after that then I check everything else.
