"We need to wean you off that."

"We need to wean you off that." -- That's what a friend of mine said to me in reference to diet sodas, and this is after my 11 year-old niece had the nerve to "tsk, tsk" her finger at me for drinking the same drink. I know if I were to drink a 12-pack a day of them that it would be unhealthy for its own reasons (artificial sweeteners, possible link with memory problems, possible link with bladder problems, etc.) but I firmly believe that in moderation, diet soda is a great substitute for calorie-laden, sugar-filled drinks.

Where do these people get off telling me what I need to stop doing when they have a soda in one hand and some fried/fattening/sugary/whatever junk food in the other?!

There are always going to be the judgers and haters...possibly people who are jealous so I wouldn't worry and just ignore them

They sound very hypocritical! It sounds like they're jealous of the effort you're making to change your diet and it probably makes them paranoid about how bad theirs is! Just ignore and keep going, you're doing great!

Thanks, guys. That was a really frustrating couple of days for me. I'm still peeved at my niece for having the nerve at 11 years-old to even act like she knows healthy from unhealthy when all she'll eat are chicken nuggets from McDonald's!!! The friend, on the other hand, was just diagnosed with Crohn's and has been changing her diet to accommodate that, but it seems like she has forgotten that she is the only one she knows who has it. She keeps telling other people what they do/don't need based on herself and it's really frustrating!

How frustrating.

You're making changes that suit you. I've got friends who don't agree with the 'diet' version of soda but that is their reasons and leave me to control my own diet... they do thankfully. I won't tell them they should drink it as much as they won't tell me I shouldn't. I don't believe it's necessarily healthy but going from full fat coke to diet lemo certainly helped my journey.

It is quite funny it was said while holding onto complete fatty crap!

Wait? Jealous because she is doing something positive? Drinking diet soda is positive? I don't think drinking any soda is positive. I tried to drink Diet Coke. It was horrible. I wish I could stop drinking all soda. I don't think it is okay for someone to tell you to stop. It is your choice!

People like that drive me mad! People have started commenting on what I eat and it drives me mad! I do eat quite a lot and quite a lot of rubbish too, but am a size 8 (uk)! One of my friends made me laugh though when she said it was disgusting how much I'd eaten and also disgusting how thin I stay when eating so much

I don't like it when anyone comments on what I'm eating or drinking, to be completely honest, because no one is perfect. If you think Diet Coke is bad, then there you go -- that's my vice. But you have your own vices, too -- we all do -- and just because it isn't Diet Coke doesn't mean you're any better than me!

Precisely! I think it's really rude to comment on people's food! I love nosying in shopping trollies and the only time I've ever raised an eyebrow was at a man with a super healthy trolley! And that was in a totally impressed way it's no business of mine what other people eat - although I will pass comment to OH when he's sitting eating cake and moaning about being fat!

I think the people in your life worry too much about you than they do themselves. Did I read that right, is a kid who is drinking soda giving you the finger shrug? Since when it is okay that we let our kids drink sodas? Mine don't.
