eight pounds in 14 days

I read this article titled "Lose 8 Pounds in 2 Weeks", that seems like a bit too much to me. I have never went over 2lbs. at the very most in a week as most don't consider it safe. Would anyone try to drop this much this quick?

It seems to me that when diets make these kind of claims that what the person ends up losing is water weight or that the diet is so restrictive in calories that it just isn't possible to keep it up for very long without getting sick.

That seems rather unsafe to me, as well. One rule that has remained consistently entrenched in the weight-loss world is to not exceed two pounds per week.

To me, losing four pounds per week seems unsafe and incredibly difficult to maintain. I imagine the inability to maintain that amount of weight loss or the incredibly harsh demands it would take to continue it would result in a lot of people giving up on losing weight altogether.

Additionally, weight lost that rapidly almost always returns.

8lbs in two weeks is doable. I've done it before without too much hassle. Only problem is it only happens right at the being of your diet and then you lose at more of a level pace. The shock of a diet on a body that is used to have resources to spare cause rapid weight lost for a very short period. It's not a long term diet plan but if it takes 8lbs off your long game then I'm all up for it

Same as Mitch, I've done it! Only at the start of doing slimming world though, and it slowed right down after that to 2lbs-ish.

I definitely agree with you. I don't believe in quick fix solutions. It is not much hard to obtain such a weight loss, but I think this is probably unhealthy. In most cases, this is also fake: you lose water.

It's really important to be aware that for most people who get that sort of weight loss, it's usually at the start, and is most likely a lot of fluid loss from the cells rather than fat. There will be some fat loss, usually some muscle loss on very low cal diets, and also fluid loss. Depending on who you are, how big you are, etc, if you do the sums, can you effectively be creating a 14000 calorie energy deficit per week, through diet, exercise, or a combination of the two? Probably not!

So if you are for example, a female, with a maintenance weight calorie requirement of say, 2000 cals per day (probably too much for most women unless they train a fair bit), that would be an intake of 14000 cals per week.

To lose 4 lbs, they would need to half their food intake to 1000 cals per day, AND increase exercise to 1000 cals per day, or 2 hours running 7 days per week.

Could you train that hard on 1000 cals per day? I would wager that you couldn't do much more than basic tasks on that calorie level, it would just be impossible to sustain that activity with not even enough fuel to sustain basic metabolic function.

So, after all that, I would say no, forget the 4 lbs in a week, aim for something sustainable for the long term.

1% of bodyweight to lose per week is doable, so the bigger you are, the more you can afford to drop in the short term, but as you get lean, those numbers from to as low as 1/2 - 1/4 % bodyweight per week.

I tend to find that for the very overweight, 3 lbs per week can be done for a while, but then it needs to re managed at a slower level.

For my opinion it seems to be so fast to lose 8 pounds in 14 day I never use this and I think it is so hard and no healthy for body....that is my opinion...

I had 3-5lb down a week on scales when I first started slimming world. I was really surprised ... Changed my diet and the way I ate I didn't 'plan' to lose that much and I wasn't exercising. It soon slowed down, I wasn't hungry and it did stay off but I certainly wouldn't plan to get that much off.

I also lost around 8lb in 2 weeks recently detoxing but they are life style changes again which I'm trying to follow afterwards and not a quick fix back to my old eating/drinking habits.

A very, very overweight person might be able to lose 8 pounds in their first two weeks of dieting, but the average person that's only 20 or 30 pounds overweight... nah! I just don't see it happening. If you crunch the numbers, that's four pounds per week and one pound of fat has 3500 calories. As pointed out above, you'd have to create a 14,000 calorie per week deficit, or 2,000 calories per day. Most people are doing well to create a deficit of 500 calories per day, let alone 2,000!!
