Already thinking about next year...

So, the fact that I gained so much weight over these holidays (over 7 pounds) has me thinking already about next year. I really don't like the fact that I've slid back 7 pounds, or basically 2 months, in my weight loss efforts. At the rate I'd been losing weight at, I won't get back to my "pre-holiday" weight until the end of February. In other words, I'm really a total of FOUR months behind.

Face palm.

I think next year I'll be nixing all but one starchy side (the dressing) and serving it with turkey and ham. And that's it. No more having dressing AND mashed potatoes AND potato salad AND macaroni and cheese. And no more having three different pies, either!!

Wow! That is great that you are thinking about this already. Maybe by the time the holidays get here this year you will be at your goal weight and won't have to worry about this. That is sure a lot of starchy foods you ate. We only have mashed potatoes and stuffing.

Aboutme, I think we will always have to "worry about it," even AFTER we hit our goal weight. You can't just diet until you hit that magic number and then stop, otherwise you will just gain all the weight back. Whatever changes you make, you have to make permanently, otherwise the weight loss won't be permanent.

MandaBear, kudos to you for thinking ahead. We are going to have to make some holiday dinner changes around here, too.

Glad I'm not the only one. I put on 6lb. How is that even possible!! It took me a couple of months to lose that and I managed to put it back on in about a week

I think my plan for next year is to lose 6lbs to much and then I'll be the right weight by Jan 2015

I think it's good to be prepared and to think ahead and plan for such things, but I also think that you need to just take a deep breath, forget about your bit of backsliding, and get back on track. I think if we dwell on failures too much, we put ourselves into a mindset of failure. Forget the past. Start over from today.

The only way to get ahead is to think ahead. I try to do this for everything in life because if you can spot where the snafu's will crop up you can just jump over them and continue on a good path.

I can't believe how much I used to eat back in the day. I mean we used to have cookies, cakes, pies, and sweets all the time during the holidays. I just can't even fathom that right now. And, I still gain weight!

I think a lot of Xmas weight gain tends to go quite quickly, cos it's more than likely bloating and water retention! I know I for one eat more salty foods over Xmas and drink a lot more alcohol!

I do think aboutme has a point though, if you're at target, you can afford to relax a little for special occasions! I was a few lbs below target jut before Xmas and gained back up to target, which hasn't felt like a disaster! Yes you need to adjust your long term eating habits if you want to keep the weight off, but I'll be damned if I'm eating healthily every day for the rest of my life

Try not to beat yourself up so much. It's not productive. I do think that changing some holiday food traditions is a good idea though, and I certainly need to do it myself! We had way too much junk around, even after cutting back.
