Shin pain while jogging?

I've just had my circuit increased last week on the treadmill to alternate 1min powerwalk (6.0km/h) and 30secs jog (7.5km/h at the mo) but once i get to about the 3rd burst of jogging my shins feel as if they're burning. No amount of stretching helps which makes me think it's shin splints?

Is there any remedy for this or should I ask to do something else instead of the treadmill for less impact?

I'm gutted coz it was a goal of mine to jog on the treadmill at the gym, and my fitness has improved so I can do, but my shins are in agony

any advice/input?

Is this at the gym? Could you ask one of the PTs for advice? Not something I've experienced although I only power walk ATM!

I know weird but I've found if my trainers aren't tight enough my bottom of legs/ankles/feet hurt more

I'd take it back to the week before programme or have longer bursts in between
Sorry hit enter too quick! It does sound like shin splints so you'll have to go back to what is not causing you any pain, otherwise you may have to have a rest altogether. My son got this a while back playing football and could barely walk :/ So I'd say forget about the fast circuits at the minute and build it up slower xx

It does sound like shin splints hun, like M said, try taking it back a week and build it up gradually! The other thing you could try is alternating between hot and cold compresses on your legs, not entirely sure what it does, but I've heard it works!

Probably hun! I've got dodgy ankles and have found exercise is so much easier on them
Now I've lost than it used to be! My knees too, they used to take a lot of pressure and jumping jacks etc used to knacker them!

Shin splints

I know the agony you're in because 40 years ago when I was in the Navy I could only run on our TINY helicopter deck... in circles. I know this won't surprise you but steel decks DON'T give - like running on concrete. During this time I developed shin splints which I understand results from the vertical POUNDING of your legs on a surface that won't give. All I can recommend is to get some REALLY good running shoes and be patient because they take a LONG time to heal. Obviously, the weight you want to lose contributes to the pounding.

Thanks DavisM, i do need to get some good running shoes. Havent suffered too badly recently, although they flared up again last week so just rested, and they seem fine for now! Hopefully as i keep losing it will ease too

Definitely shin splints and unfortunately you need to rest up to allow them time to heal. Follow RICE - Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevate for a few days with no running and then start back up with walking and see how you feel. Any pain in your shins at all and stop and go back to RICE.

The pain is from the muscle in front of your shin starting to become inflamed and the muscle fibers detaching. If you don't rest, and try to work through it then you are at risk of fracturing your shins (rare though). I learnt this the hard way and when on an Army training course I just kept pushing through the shin pain and ended up with hairline fractures on both shins. If I had just rested when I had the pain I would have been out of action for a few days, not a couple of months as it ended up being.

The good thing is though, that it's totally fixable through rest and only takes a few days.

If you're working with a PT at a gym, definitely tell them and ask their advice as they've been working with you.
