Using smash as a thickener?

Hi - just made syn free red onion gravy for the first time. Tastes lovely but is very thin. I read on another post that someone used smash to thicken it up to save syns on flour and cornflour etc. I believe smash is free on green and EE days?

I have a (Bulgarian) version of smash called Kaufland Classic Puree - 100g pack, whole pack is 57 calories. Would this be free on green and EE days as well please? If on a red day, how many syns would this gravy now be if I added a tbsp of this puree?

Thanks

Smash is free on EE and green, but only when used as it should be. (On a red day it would be 16 syns per 100g, or 29 syns per 176g pack when made up with water)
When you start using it as an alternative to something else, i.e. to thicken gravy or as a pizza base, you have to syn it at the same value as whatever you are using it to replace.
Does that make sense?

Gravy powder is 0.5 syns on all plans for 1tsp, and granules are 1 syns per tsp on all plans, so to say you would have to syn the smash the same as the gravy granules/powder, you may prefer to use that instead...

Oh I see - wow that's a bit complicated. Well it doesn't seem worth the effort at the moment as I still have a jar of gravy powder left. However, when that's gone, I can't get any over here so I'll have to make my own. Would it work out as less syns to just use flour instead of smash then? I must say it tasted lovely x

Oh hang on I just read your reply again. So - making my own - I'd have to syn either the amount of smash I'd use or the amount of flour I'd use to REPLACE the gravy. So, whatever I used to thicken it would only be synned as the same as the gravy powder anyway???

Plain flour is 0.5 syns per tsp, so it works out the same as gravy powder x

sarahc you've made a middle aged woman happy! I love my gravy and, to be honest, even a bit runny it was lovely. My OH just mashed it all into the leftover cottage pie and it was lovely. I had a taste. Thanks for explaining it all to me xxx
