Friends with ex?

I would not say we are friends but we do talk considering we have a child together. This week I received a holiday card from his mom which I thought was quite nice since we really have not spoken in the last decade.

I would normally not see a problem with it but I certainly wouldn't advocate it. Most people would likely have a problem with it, but if it works for you, then that's great!

I don't have any problem with it if it works for everyone involved and there's no jealousy among the new partners. I think it was lovely his mum sent you a card

Of the last three serious relationships I've been in, only one ended with us remaining friends. We still talk on the phone every couple weeks just to catch up on things. We were together for ten years.

The one prior to that lasted thirteen years and I have nothing at all to do with him. No friendship there.

The most recent relationship lasted three years. It wasn't as serious as the others and we never lived together. I broke up with him a year ago and we tried to remain friends. About two weeks ago I had to cut off contact because he was still being a verbally abusive jerk even after all that time.

So... 33.3% of the time I can be friends with an ex.

I tolerate my ex for the kids we get on ok now really, but he's not someone I'd call for a chat or anything! My most recent ex I tried staying friends with, although I kinda cut contact when I realised we couldn't really do friends without the benefits side of things my current OH is still good friends with one of his exes, they'll chat on the phone and I actually invited her to come and stay once! We're even fb friends! I think it can work, but probably only if you've got kids together or it's ended cos you've drifted apart iykwim?

I don't see a problem staying friends with your ex - especially if you have kids together. It is great for your child too. Just because people fall out of love doesn't mean they can't remain friends.

If I had kids with one of my exes, I would try really hard to stay friends with him. Luckily though, that never happened for me (having kids with an ex, not having kids period). Kudos to those of you that managed to stay friends for the sake of your kids.

I kind of think that is how it is, not exactly a friendship but a little more than an acquaintance. When we split he would ask my thoughts on random girls he would date but that stopped in a few years. We also had some angry years where it was just terrible to try and talk without fighting, thankfully we are past that.
