Hi everyone

I'm 47 and have always been slim, but about 5 years ago I was put on beta blockers and suddenly the weight started going on. I'm not blaming the drugs totally, I think a number of things might have happened, and I'm sure we all have our different pathways to weight gain (and hopefully weight loss too).

the drugs make me crave sugar terribly, they have written off all my energy and muscle strength, to the point of me finding it very difficult to move about at home. I do a lot of admin work and only have to go out to work once or twice a week, depending on the work load and it takes every ounce of energy for this.

The doctors have decided to wean me off the beta blockers but they said it could take 6 months or so for my metabolism and energy to return to what is normal.

Meanwhile I'm actually quite afraid of my weight gain, it's not just putting on a few pounds or even a stone or two, it's significant for me and I'm worried enough about my health to want to lose it now.

I have a local slimming world but every week I just don't have the energy to go to it, and it's a real issue, it's not just 'don't feel like it.' I really want to do this but feel a lot of things are against me. As well as the beta blockers my doctor is not sure if my under active thyroid is being properly treated, but we are going to wean down on the beta blockers first and see if things improve.

Sorry to be boring with the facts, but that's it out now, I'm glad to have found this group and hope to learn and support along the way.

I've never been to slimming world, I'm vegetarian apart from eating fish, I don't like cooking and rarely cook (preferring to buy pre packed stuff), and I just need help, I'm out of control! lol

chocolate is my downfall. I live for chocolate. I can't see a life without it tbh, but before the beta blockers I didn't eat so much (as wasn't using it for energy) and it didn't make me put on weight.

I hope everything goes well with weaning off the beta blockers
Chocolate is my downfall too. I just don't seem to have any moderation with it once I start eating it!

Cooking has a massive positive in losing weight ... less processed and long life food is so good for you so I'll be honest I'm a little stuck what to suggest. I would aim for foods and snack higher protein, fresh and low carb.

Chocolate can fit into you routine in moderation. Do you like dark chocolate? It's actually good for you! My choice is ALDI's chill cherry it's 80% chocolate with a little cheeky!

Have you tried calorie counting?
