Lack of sleep causing early morning sugar cravings

Hi, always had trouble sleeping but with my weight I have quite bad sleep apnea and due to stomach problems can't use the CPAP machines. Some days I really struggle and my body is on a constant sugar/fat crave to keep me awake and active. Read a pretty good article on using Calcium to help with this :

http://www.wellnessresources.com/wei...e_consumption/

Was wondering if anyone else had strategies for coping without resorting to caffine or sugary foods? Am wary of taking sleeping pills etc as when I stop breathing I naturally awake but if I was drugged not sure how that would affect me. Despite the best of intentions I have just nom'd 6 big gooey white chocolate chip cookies and I realize this is one of my major stumbling blocks for keeping on track with diets.

This really would not surprise me... something I thought of this morning when I went out the door is if I've had a good nights sleep I don't tend to reach for a pre-workout snack or pre-workout protein shake yet on mornings I feel the quality of my sleep was poor I *need* something or I do end up feeling less energetic and a couple of times I've been light headed.

Maybe a protein shake would benefit you? I am using PhD Diet Whey Protein which comes in many flavours... at the moment I have Cherry bakewell, chocolate orange and vanilla in my cupboard!

Have you ever had a word with your doctor over sleeping problems?

I literally fall asleep at my desk. Which would not be bad if I didn't snore due to an old rugby injury. My workmates take it in turns to throw things. I have had severe sleep apnea diagnosed and was given a machine which blows moist air down your throat all night. This caused havoc my stomach and as I couldn't eat much due to the pain so I lost about 6 stone in a very short period of time at which point I didn't need the machine. Not using the machine meant I wasn't in as much stomach pain and could function normally so was discharged by everyone. Now I am fat again, lol. If I could crash diet to about 24 stone my sleep would improve massively and my eating would regulate itself. Think am gonna have to come up with something extremely effective.
Keep forgetting about the protein shakes have a load of tubs of different ones stashed somewhere. They would make ideal breakfasts.

Hi Paul., im under medical observations and blood tests etc for the excessive tiredness i am experiencing atm. Although it's no where near as bad as sleep apnea I feel your pain. I too reach for sugary things and diet coke to give me a boost. I have just started slimming world (AGAIN) so I'm changing my whole diet to try and give me energy. But what I used to do for a sugar fix when I was younger and on weight watchers was have Rice Krispies with skimmed milk and artificial sweetener because on WW sweetner's were free so I used to have a really thick layer on top of my cereal or fruit. I hope you find your sugar fix soon . [emoji2]

Hi Rachel, hope you find an answer to your tiredness and they sort it. That's how I started just badly fatigued to the point was always late for work and had no energy. Mine turned out to be a rare lung disease that was taking my oxygen. Thankfully I got through it but they had to give me lots of steroids which is where my weight shot up to what it is now. This caused more health problems, lol. Still the trick is not to give up and keep trying different things. Something will work

I would check out the Plexus line of products. I've recently started using them myself (about 1.5 months ago) and I've literally never felt better. The focus is overall health, I take ProBio5 at night and drink the "pink drink" in the mornings. It's not a meal replacement which I love! The drink really helps with my appetite and not craving sugars. I even quit drinking soda, which has always been the hardest for me. If you want more info send me a message. Not sure what the rules are around here for shameful promotions but if I didn't use it and see a huge difference I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. This happens to be the first I've tried any product like this & the benefits so far make me feel happy inside.

Well, If you’ve found that munching sugary snacks just makes you crave more sugary snacks, you’re not alone. Eating lots of simple carbohydrates -- without the backup of proteins or fats -- can quickly satisfy hunger and give your body a short-term energy boost, but they almost as quickly leave you famished again and craving more.

Hi Justine,
thanks had a look at the Plexus products. Am on a fair mishmash of meds at the moment so bit wary on using products. They do look interesting though. Thanks.

Hi Katie,
yep I never seem to learn. Is just so easy to grab a pack freshly backed chocolate chip cookies to get that quick energy hit. Then spend the rest of the day berating myself for being week willed blob. However recently have managed to shop a bit more often get more fresh produce so been doing a lot of smoothies. Have one of those monster 3 horse power blenders so just throw fruit at it and slurp down the results. Am back to slowly droping weight again.
