Condiments

You really have to watch how many calories are added to a meal just by the condiments alone. Ketchup, barbecue sauce, mayonnaise, salad dressing. Whew!

I have to stop thinking of all these as free add-ons to the meal and start tracking these better.

I think this is how they sneak extra things in and most people never pay attention to them. I use all of them sparingly now. For a long time I never used any and I which I could get back into that mode sometimes.

Oh, yeah, I totally agree! I try to take it easy on the condiments. I have never used many condiments to begin with, but I still should have been watching better.

I rarely have any condiments, I'll occasionally have ketchup or sweet chilli sauce. It's definitely the way to sneak up your calories without realising! I'm not a big salad dressing fan at all, but it's the worst for it! If I fancy something on a salad, I'll drizzle over olive oil and balsamic vinegar!

I totally agree! I was just explaining this to my daughter the other day. She has been eating really healthy except for all the ketchup she eats. I told her to look at the calories. She was shocked! She doesn't like mustard though.

The amount of sugar in ketchup's shocking too!

It is! And here, they put high fructose corn syrup in everything which is even worse than sugar.

I just checked my bottle in the fridge. One tablespoon of ketchup is 20 calories. That doesn't seem bad, but I know I use a lot more than that. I could easily add 80 calories to my food just by dipping my chips in ketchup. It adds up fast!

Yes things like mayo can be so high in fat. But then the condiments low in fat can be high in sugar and salt to substitute! I don't really eat many condiments these days.

Do you think there should be way of measuring how much sauce you are using per meal and how many calories it is adding up to?
